When the first thunderclap tears through the sky, breaking the silence of the cold winter, sleeping creatures wake up one after another, plants sprout and flowers bloom—Awakening of Insects arrives with the spring light. As the third solar term in the 24 solar terms, it is a signal of mid-spring, a "wake-up ceremony" of nature, embodying the power of all things growing, as well as the Chinese people's life wisdom of conforming to nature.

What is Awakening of Insects (Jingzhe)?

"Jing" means to stir, and "Zhe" means to hibernate—the name Awakening of Insects comes from the spring thunder stirring the insects hibernating in the soil for the winter. It usually falls on March 5th or 6th of the Gregorian calendar; in 2026, it is March 5th. At this time, the sun reaches 345°of the ecliptic longitude, the temperature rises steadily, and rainfall increases. The south becomes gradually warm, and the north fades the cold—nature ushers in a new growth cycle, full of vitality everywhere.

The ancients divided Awakening of Insects into three phases, vividly depicting the phenological changes of spring: "First phase: Peach blossoms begin to bloom", dotting the spring picture; "Second phase: Orioles begin to sing", singing loudly on the branches to play the spring movement; "Third phase: Eagles transform into doves", eagles hide and doves increase, showing the agility and wonder of nature.

Traditions of Awakening of Insects: Life Wisdom Hidden in the Season

Worshipping the White Tiger is a traditional custom in southern China, originating from the ancients' awe of nature. In ancient people's cognition, the White Tiger is the god of right and wrong, who comes out to forage during Awakening of Insects and is likely to cause disputes. People worship the White Tiger to pray for protection, resolve conflicts, and hope for no disputes or disasters in the new year. This custom embodies the ancients' longing for a harmonious life.

Associated with worshipping the White Tiger is the interesting and ritualistic custom of "Beating the Villains" in southern China. People tie straw or paper into "villains", representing troublemakers and sources of disasters around them, then gently beat them with shoes, symbolizing driving away villains, dispelling bad luck, and praying for smooth things and staying away from troubles in the new year. This custom is not only a psychological comfort for the ancients, but also an expectation for a better life.

The climate is dry during Awakening of Insects, making people prone to dry mouth and tongue. Thus, there is a custom of eating pears in northern China, which combines health preservation and auspicious meanings. Pears are cold in nature and sweet in taste, which can promote fluid production to quench thirst, moisten the lungs and resolve phlegm, adapting to the climate characteristics of this season. At the same time, "pear" is homophonic to "leave", symbolizing leaving disasters and diseases behind, embodying people's good wishes for health and peace. Eating raw or boiling pear soup—various ways to unlock the health secrets of spring.

"Busy sowing in spring during Awakening of Insects"—with rising temperatures and increasing rainfall, Awakening of Insects becomes an important node for farming. Farmers are busy sorting out farmland and sowing crops to lay the foundation for the annual harvest: rice and vegetables are sown in the south, and preparations for sowing wheat and corn are made in the north, presenting a busy scene in the fields. This is the coexistence of humans and nature, the cultivation in accordance with the seasons, and the expectation for a bumper harvest.

Beneath the Spring Thunder, Growth Booms with Unstoppable Force

Awakening of Insects is a wake-up call from nature and a transformation of life. It reminds us that the cold winter will eventually pass, and vitality will eventually bloom—just like life, after silence, it will eventually usher in growth and blooming. Among the 24 solar terms, Awakening of Insects focuses on "awakening", carrying the ancients' observation and awe of nature, and conveying the life concept of "conforming to the seasons and growing towards the sun"—embracing every hope and beauty in the vitality of spring.
